10 Rights of Dialysis Patients

RIGHTS

  • Be treated at the facility of your choice and with consideration and respect and in full recognition of your individual and personal needs including the right to privacy in treatment
  • To be fully informed about your illness by your doctor unless medically contraindicated
  • Accept / Refuse any medication or treatment offered to you and be informed of the risks and consequences of such action
  • You have the rights to refuse to participate in any experimental research
  • Be informed of all the services and charges of the facility not covered by Medicare / Insurance
  • Can approve or refuse to release your medical records to any individual outside the facility
  • Be informed of all the alternative methods of treatment and all treatment options and can change treatment modality when feasible and approved by doctor/dialysis facility
  • Not to be transferred or discharged against your will except for medical reasons
  • Be given advance notice when being transferred or discharged to ensure orderly transfer/discharge
  • Last but not least, one of the most important rights is to be aware of your rights and responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand your health condition and the services being provided to you
  • Follow instructions/recommendations of your doctor or assume full responsibility for the consequences of failing to do so
  • Comply with the facility rules and regulations, which have been developed to protect you and ensure safety and effective quality care
  • Follow prescribed diet, medications and treatment in accordance with your doctor’s orders
  • Be active in your treatment plan
  • Arrive on time for treatments and give advance notice of delays and absences when possible
  • Pay for all services rendered and be aware of these services covered by Medicare/Insurance
  • Conduct yourself in a manner that is respectful and considerate of staff and other patients
  • Bring all home medications to the facility for review when requested
  • Inform the staff or doctor if the instructions or explanations given to you are not understood or will not be followed.
